Toluca face a significant statistical challenge in their upcoming visit to the Estadio Universitario. The Diablos Rojos have not won at El Volcán, the home of Tigres UANL, since matchday 9 of the Clausura 2021, a streak that now stretches to eight consecutive matches without a victory.

A burdensome streak

That last win was a 1-0 result with a goal from Alexis Canelo. Since then, in the following eight visits, the record shows five wins for the felinos and three draws. In that period, Tigres have scored 16 goals and conceded only six, and in the last two clashes there, Toluca's attack failed to score. The most recent duel at that venue, corresponding to matchday 3 of the Clausura 2026, ended goalless. This drought of five years, seven months and eight days matches a negative club record set between 2000 and 2005.

The current context adds further layers to the challenge. Toluca arrive leading Liga MX with 20 points after 10 matchdays, but are coming off a 2-1 loss to Monterrey last weekend. Their next opponent, Tigres, sit in 15th place and urgently need points to keep their Liguilla hopes alive. Brazilian defender Joaquim Pereira, a Tigres player, emphasised the match's importance in a press conference on Thursday. "We are focused, we are concentrated on the match against Toluca," Pereira said. "We know it is a very important match for us."

Recent history and what's next

The most recent meetings between the two have been decisive, albeit with a bitter end for Toluca. The team managed by Antonio 'Turco' Mohamed lost the last two finals they played against Tigres: the Apertura 2025 final (1-0 in the first leg) and the Concachampions final in May 2026, both decided by penalty shootouts. The last overall head-to-head, however, was a 1-1 draw on May 31st.

To break the visiting curse, Toluca will need to improve their offensive performance on a difficult ground. The match is scheduled for Sunday, October 10th and represents an opportunity for the league leaders to stays, while Tigres fight to keep their title aspirations alive.
