Toluca let a clear win slip through their fingers in a 1-1 draw with Atlético de San Luis during Matchday 12 of the Apertura 2026. The Scarlet Devils, sitting second in Liga MX with 21 points from a record of six wins, three draws and three losses, took the lead at home but were unable to hold on, conceding a late equaliser at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Erick Gutiérrez put the hosts ahead in the 67th minute, capitalising on a period of pressure that had seen Paulinho hit the post. The visitors, who had threatened through David Rodríguez and Helinho earlier, fought back. A controversial penalty was awarded in the 73rd minute, and Rafael Llorente Sanz stepped up to convert from the spot. "Rafael Llere Sanz converted a penalty in the 96th minute to seal the definitive 1-1," the forward said after the match.

Missed chances

Chances were plentiful for both sides. Federico Viñas, the team's top scorer this season with five goals, had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half, while Anderson Duarte and Alexis Vega tested San Luis goalkeeper Hugo González. At the other end, Toluca's Gibran Lajud was called into action several times. Despite late pressure and substitutions like Jorge Díaz Price and Juanpe, the Red Devils could not find a winning goal.

The point leaves Toluca in second place in the Liga MX standings with 21 points, but now three points behind leaders Club América. The team is now three matches without a win, with a recent run of zero wins, two draws and three losses in their last five outings, a sequence that includes the 3-2 defeat to Tigres UANL, the 2-1 loss to Monterrey, and the 3-3 and 1-1 draws with Cruz Azul and San Luis. Their next challenge comes this Saturday 22 October, again at home, against ninth-placed Club Tijuana. Top scorer Federico Viñas, with five goals this season, will aim to rediscover his form as the team faces a demanding run of fixtures. The side has scored 26 goals and conceded 16 so far this campaign, for a goal difference of +10.
